Before the Interview

Get a good night’s sleep and dress in professional attire even if the interviewer won’t be able to see you. Arriving well-rested and looking the part will help you feel more confident, which will come across during the conversation. Review the job posting and company website to familiarize yourself with their mission and values. Have a list of questions ready to ask the interviewer about the role, the team, and the company.

Do your research

It is essential that you research the company before your phone interview. Review the company website and read through any news articles or press releases to learn as much as possible. This research will help you determine if the company is a good fit for you and it will give you something to talk about during the interview.

In addition to research, it is important that you prepare for common phone interview questions. Prepare answers to questions about your experience, your skills and your goals. Practicing your answers will help you sound confident and polished during the interview.

Prepare questions

You should always prepare questions to ask your interviewer. This shows that you’re truly interested in the position and the company.

Some interviewers will ask if you have any questions at the end of the interview. If they don’t, it’s still a good idea to have some prepared. Questions about the company, the position, and the industry demonstrate that you’ve done your research and want to know more about whether or not this is the right opportunity for you.

Asking questions also gives you an opportunity to learn more about what it would be like to work at the company and whether or not your values align. Do your best to avoid asking questions that could easily be answered by looking at the company’s website or a quick Google search — those won’t impress your interviewer.

Here are some examples of good questions to ask in an interview:
-Can you tell me more about the day-to-day responsibilities of this position?
-What are the biggest challenges facing someone in this role?
-What does success look like in this position?
-How would you describe the culture of this organization?
-What are some projects I could be working on if I were in this role?

Dress the part

One of the best ways to make a great first impression is to dress the part. This doesn’t mean that you need to break out your best suit or dress, but you should at least be presentable. Business casual is usually a good bet, but if you’re not sure, it’s better to err on the side of being too dressy than too casual. And no matter what, make sure you are well-groomed and have good hygiene.

During the Interview

You will want to sound interested, but not overbearing.

Be aware of your body language

Your body language during the interview makes up a large part of the first impression you give off. Ensure that you sit with an upright and relaxed posture, maintaining eye contact with the interviewer throughout the conversation. Be aware of any fidgeting or nervous habits you may have, such as playing with your hair or clothing, and try to avoid them.

Giving off a confident and positive attitude will make it more likely that the interviewer will be interested in learning more about you and what you can bring to the company.

Speak clearly

When you are on the phone, it is important to speak clearly. This means that you should enunciate your words and not mumble. Additionally, you should try to slow down your speech. This will prevent the interviewer from having to ask you torepeat yourself.

Be honest

Don’t try to be something you’re not. Be honest about your experience, your skills, and your availability. The last thing you want is to get hired for a job that’s not a good fit, or to be let go because you can’t do what you said you could.

After the Interview

After the phone interview, there are a few things you should and shouldn’t do in order to make the best impression on the employer. You should send a thank you email, follow up with the hiring manager, and research the company. You shouldn’t contact the interviewer more than once, ask about salary, or badmouth your previous employer.

Send a thank you note

Sending a thank you note after an interview is always a good idea. It shows your interviewer that you are grateful for the opportunity and that you are still interested in the position.

There is no need to send a handwritten note, although it would be nice. An email will suffice. In your note, you can mention something that you discussed during the interview or possibly something that you forgot to mention. You can also use this opportunity to reiterate your interest in the job and your qualifications for it.

Sending a thank you note is a nice gesture and it may even help you to stand out from the other candidates.
