What Is PHR Recertification?

PHR recertification is the process of renewing your certification in order to maintain your PHR credential. You will need to complete a total of 60 recertification credits every three years in order to renew your certification. Of those 60 credits, at least 30 must come from activities that relate directly to the human resource field, and the other 30 can come from activities related to other business disciplines. Examples of activities that can be used for recertification include attending workshops and seminars, participating in professional development activities, and writing articles or whitepapers.

The Benefits of PHR Recertification

In today’s rapidly changing business environment, human resource professionals must keep up with the latest trends and regulations to be effective in their roles. To maintain their edge, many HR professionals choose to pursue recertification through the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI).

HRCI recertification is available for three different credentials: Associate Professional in Human Resources (aPHR™), Professional in Human Resources® (PHR®) and Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR®). Recertification demonstrates your commitment to your career and the HR profession, and can help you stay up-to-date on the latest developments in the field.

There are many benefits of HRCI recertification, including:

  • Maintaining your credential: To maintain your PHR, you must recertify every three years. HRCI recertification ensures that you continue to meet the high standards required for the PHR credential.
  • Staying current: The HR field is constantly changing, and HRCI recertification helps you keep up with the latest trends and developments. By pursuing HRCI recertification, you can make sure that your knowledge and skills are up-to-date.
  • Improving your job prospects: In today’s competitive job market, employers are looking for job candidates who have demonstrated a commitment to lifelong learning. By pursuing HRCI recertification, you can show potential employers that you are committed to staying current in your field.
  • Enhancing your professional reputation: Holders of the PHR credential are respected by their peers for their knowledge and expertise. Pursuing HRCI recertification can help you enhance your professional reputation and stand out from your competitors.
    How to Maintain PHR Certification

PHR recertification is valid for three years and must be completed within the certification period. There are two ways to renew:
  • retake the PHR exam; or
  • earn 60 recertification credits (RUs).

To retake the exam, simply register and pay the renewal fee. You will then have one year to take the test. If you choose to recertify by RUs, you must first earn 60 RUs within your three-year certification period. RUs can be earned through a variety of activities, including attending workshops and conferences, participating in webinars, publishing articles, and more. Once you have earned the required RUs, you will need to submit an application for recertification, along with the renewal fee.

How to Renew PHR Certification

To renew your PHR certification, you must complete at least 60 continuing education (CE) credits within the 3-year period prior to your certification expiration date. Credits must be in subjects related to the HR body of knowledge. Of the 60 required credits, at least 10 must come from attending one or more HR conferences, symposiums, or workshops. You will also need to have a minimum of 20 credits from activities such as:

-Online HR courses
