The SPHR credential is evidence of an individual’s knowledge and expertise in the field of human resources. To earn the SPHR credential, candidates must have a minimum of four years of experience in a professional-level HR position and must pass a rigorous examination. The SPHR credential demonstrates that an individual has the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively manage an organization’s human capital and to lead HR initiatives.

The Requirements of the SPHR

To earn your Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) credential, you must first demonstrate that you have at least 10 years of experience in the HR field, with at least 7 of those years coming in a leadership role. You must also show that you have worked in 2 or more HR job function areas and have a thorough understanding of the business as a whole. Finally, you must pass a rigorous exam administered by the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI).

The Application Process


Whether you are a first-time applicant or renewing your certification, you will use the same online application. The online system will guide you through the application process and provide instructions specific to your situation.

Before beginning your application, we recommend that you review the eligibility requirements and the certification process overview to ensure that you meet all of the requirements and understand what steps to expect.

Applying for Certification
When you are ready to begin your application, log in or create an account in our online system. From your dashboard, select “Apply for Certification” under the “Get Certified” section.

You will be prompted to select which credential(s) you wish to apply for and provide some basic biographical information before being directed to the appropriate application. The first page of each application will provide an overview of the questions that you will be asked. You can also review sample applications (with responses) on our website.

Most questions on the application are required; however, some questions may not apply to your experience level or situation. If a question does not apply to you, please enter “NA” or “None.”

When responding to essay questions, please limit your responses to 500 words or less per question.

The Renewal Process


To maintain the SPHR credential, practitioners must renew every three years by:

Retaking the SPHR exam; or
Earning 60 professional development credits (PDCs), including 30 strategic PDCs.

The comprehensive SPHR exam is designed to assess HR competency and covers six functional areas: business management and strategy, workforce planning and employment, human resource development, employee and labor relations, compensation and benefits, and occupational health and safety.
